Summary/Abstract: This report presents the results of a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of standardized interviews conducted with respondents who have observed completed financial fraud schemes carried out through electronic mail (phishing) and telephone communication (vishing), as well as attempted cases of such fraud. The interviews were conducted within the framework of an international research project focused on the prevention of remote financial fraud, implemented by an international consortium across six European countries: Bulgaria, Germany, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovakia, and Turkey. The analysis identifies and systematizes the main cognitive heuristics and mechanisms of automatic decision-making that fraudsters exploit in their communication with potential victims in order to successfully complete the fraud cycle. Based on these findings, a structured classification of these mechanisms is developed within the framework of existing theoretical models in the fields of cognitive psychology and behavioral economics.
