Summary/Abstract: Founded at the time of the Romanticism during the 19th century, ethnographic museums and collections are entering the 21st century as specific spaces where cognitive processes on several levels proceed. In the beginning, ethnographic museums and collections served to present or collect folk art. At that time, a number of collections of material culture were formed. In time, the content of applied ethnology established itself as a science through museums that served to rescue fading traditional culture and systematic collections whose structure reflected a symbolic expression of a general culture.
