Summary/Abstract: Supremacy of a literary approach in folklore studies has its historical roots in the works of Vuk Karadžić and the Romanticism, with the special emphasis on linguistics and folk narratives. Some ethnologists, who also have tried to include ethnographic material in folklore research, carried on the tradition of literary-historical and comparative- philological studies of folklore. This kind of approach has several limitations, related to the possible aims, needs and analytical possibilities of anthropology as a science. In this sense, the differences in folklore studies between anthropological and literary approach should be pointed out. Therefore, re-naming the existing course Folklore to Anthropology of Folklore (department of Ethnology and Anthropology, Belgrade University of Philosophy) is aimed at emphasizing these differences. The accent is put on various prose-genres, ”little“ genres found in ”folklore speech“ and ”ethnography of oral communications“. On the other hand, the highlights in analytical methodological sense, are in functional, contextual, communicational, structural semantic and psychological approaches of folklore genres and folklore groups.
