Summary/Abstract: The article presents several recent examples of interaction between anthropology, ethnology, history, philosophy, sociology, and cultural studies. The author starts from the premise that anthropology and ethnology are clearly distinctive (although similar) scientific disciplines, and then points to their hybridization through aforementioned sciences and fields of study. Their interdependency means that one has to understand multidisciplinarity as the necessary prerequisite for understanding the world we live in. On the other hand, the article also mentions revitalization and reinterpretation of some key anthropological concepts (such as fieldwork, location, or culture), as well as the importance of the flexible use of methodology. A particular emphasis is put on the fieldwork as the fundamental prerequisite of any anthropological or ethnological research. It is also pointed out that methodology adjusted to a specific research problem is much more important for the successful scholarly inquiry than any ”principles“ or ”theoretical schools“– hence, the author stresses the importance of communication between anthropologists and ethnologists from different countries and research traditions, both within the Balkans, and beyond it.
