Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the role of International Financial Institutions (IFIs) such as the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and the regional development banks in shaping the economic development of emerging and low-income countries. IFIs provide financial assistance, policy guidance and technical support to promote macroeconomic stability, poverty reduction and sustainable growth. Drawing on evidence from Africa and Latin America, the paper explores how financial institutions arrangements influence development trajectories, while also considering criticisms of conditionality and public expenditure management. The findings emphasize how IFIs are evolving in response to global challenges such as climate change, digital transformation and geopolitical shifts.
