Summary/Abstract: Over the last decade, the concept of sustainable development in the European Union has undergone a significant evolution, moving from a common understanding of a balance between economic growth, social justice and environmental protection to strategic frameworks and policies. With the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal, sustainable development is at the center of its vision. The changes in the strategic goals are expressed in the integration of the green and digital transitions, the pursuit of climate neutrality by 2050, the circular economy and social sustainability, making the EU a global leader. The efforts are complemented by financing instruments as well as strengthening the regulatory framework in various areas. Comparative data for Bulgaria will also be analyzed within the framework of the study.
