Summary/Abstract: Over 17 years since its accession, Bulgaria's full incorporation into the European Union remains unfinished, notably regarding the Schengen Area. This paper examines the critical link between Bulgaria's domestic institutional reforms and analyses the prospects for its continued development and for deeper EU integration. It argues that persistent challenges in upholding the rule of law and combating corruption have created a trust deficit, acting as the primary political obstacle to full Schengen membership and deeper convergence. The analysis concludes that Bulgaria's future development within the Union is contingent on a renewed domestic commitment to strengthening democratic institutions.
