Summary/Abstract: The integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union remains constrained by persistent economic and institutional challenges. This paper analyses trade barriers, structural weaknesses, and policy misalignments as main factors that hinder the region’s convergence with the EU. Drawing on existing scientific literature and European institutions reports, the study identifies non-tariff barriers, weak institutional capacity, and low FDI as critical obstacles. It considers EU instruments such as IPA III and the Economic and Investment Plan in addressing these issues. Policy recommendations highlight regulatory convergence, improved governance, and strengthened regional cooperation to foster sustainable integration.
