Summary/Abstract: This study analyses sustainable tourism as a major trend in international tourism. The research aims to identify the reasons for its emergence, define its conceptual framework, and assess its role within the global tourism system. A descriptive-analytical methodology is applied, using secondary statistical data and policy documents from international and European organizations. The results highlight the growing importance of sustainability, the spread of certification systems, and the potential of Bulgaria to develop competitive advantages. The conclusions emphasize the need for integrated national policies and alignment with European standards to achieve long-term benefits.
