Contacts of Bosniaks from the Cazin Region with the Habsburg Dynasty: An Example of the Political Behavior of the Local Bosniak Elite in the Context of the Austro-Hungarian Occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summary/Abstract: Based on available sources and literature, and following the broader context, the paper presents how the Bosniak political and religious elite in Cazin, during the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, established direct contacts with the Habsburg dynasty. The paper focuses on specific examples of interaction between the local elite and the Habsburgs, which primarily include homage (an act of expressing loyalty to the ruler) delegations sent to Emperor Franz Joseph I or other members of the dynasty, followed by other forms of expressing loyalty, such as public congratulations and letters of thanks sent to the Habsburg court or the occupation authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Given that this process was mutual, the paper also presents the reciprocal gestures of flattery and rewarding of the local elite, in the form of decorations with orders and symbolic donations for the development of the local community, which came from the Habsburgs or the occupation authorities. These gestures aimed at binding the Cazin elite to the interests of the Monarchy and sending a kind of welcome message to the new order. Furthermore, the paper also pays some attention to the modernization of the Cazin Krajina region, which, among other things, is a consequence of these interactions.
