Summary/Abstract: Eight countries in West Africa united by a currency union with a population of approximately 135 million use a single currency, the CFA franc, left over from France‘s colonial legacy. The specifics of the decolonization processes carried out help France influence the behavior of its former colonies. Attention will also be paid to Guinea, as the only Francophone country that refused to become part of French plans for a post- colonial Africa. This paper will trace the mechanisms of French influence in its former colonies in the region, which very well express Kwame Nkrumah‘s description of neocolonialism as the next stage of colonial rule.
