Summary/Abstract: Externalization of activities in the global value chains (GVCs) is a relatively new research issue in the domain of international business. This corresponds to the role of factoryless goods producing firms (FGPs) in GVCs. The aim of the present paper is to analyze how FGPs’ profitability is affected, facing challenges in line with cost optimization, given the recent economic turbulence. Based on the examples of lead firms in buyerdriven GVCs, a major finding is the FGPs’ gross margin is slightly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, nor is a case of an upside change during the subsequent period of economic recovery.
