Summary/Abstract: The article examines journalistic fact-checking as a key tool for countering disinformation in the digital media environment, focusing on the Bulgarian media system. The study combines a theoretical overview with an analysis of online media in Bulgaria. In the theoretical part, fact-checking is conceptualized as both a journalistic and epistemic practice, functioning in the conditions of a complex information environment and competing interpretations. The main stages in its development, its features, and trends are examined. The results of the media analysis show that fact-checking in the Bulgarian media environment is partially institutionalized. It is pointed out that it has the potential to become a key tool for increasing the trust and quality of journalism in Bulgaria, but requires systematic development and institutional support.
