Summary/Abstract: The concept of competence has gained a central position in pedagogical science, carrying significant implications for curriculum design, methodology, and assessment. The various definitions of competence reflect differing theoretical perspectives and educational paradigms. This comparative analysis aims to highlight the main definitions of competence in pedagogy, to compare them, and to discuss the implications each definition holds for educational practice. The term "competence" originates from the Latin competentia, denoting the idea of suitability, conformity, or capability. In everyday language, the notion is commonly used to refer to a person's specific ability or aptitude to act effectively within a particular domain or context. This general understanding serves as a foundation for later conceptual developments, especially in the fields of psychology and pedagogy.
