Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to analyze the effectiveness and sustainability of Bulgaria’s road safety policy in terms of convergence to the EU policy standards and priorities. The main accent is put on the economic dimensions of this policy, especially on the cost effectiveness of the measures implemented, on the social and economic consequences of road accidents and on the level of institutional readiness of the country to introduce long-term strategies. A comparative analysis of statistical indicators, concerning EU member-states, is used to identify the differences and gaps in the national road safety framework. The study proposes economically sound recommendations for improvement of the strategic planning, funding and monitoring of the road safety policy in the country, as well as measures for decreasing of the number of traffic accidents and economic losses. In the conclusion, they are discussed the opportunities for better convergence of the Bulgarian road safety policy to the European priorities till 2030.
