Supply of Transport Services for Cargo Transportation in the Conditions of the Bulgarian Market

Summary/Abstract: The present study is dedicated to examining the supply of freight transport services in the context of the Bulgarian market, with the aim of identifying certain structural problems. For this purpose, the author analyzes the development of transport service supply in Bulgaria based on the dynamics of the economic performance of some of the country’s largest transport companies, as well as the number of vehicles serving the national transport market. The study identifies two main issues. During the course of the study, two main issues stand out. The first pertains to the reported losses incurred by state-owned enterprises, namely the National Railway Infrastructure Company, BDZ – Freight Services Ltd., BDZ – Passenger Services Ltd., and the national air carrier Bulgaria Air JSC. Although the latter entities do not fall within the specific market segment under review, they are nonetheless included in the study due to their indirect influence. The second issue concerns the declining number of seagoing vessels registered under the Bulgarian flag.
