Summary/Abstract: The development of science is of key importance in view of the priorities set out in the National Strategy for the Development of Scientific Research in the Republic of Bulgaria 2017 – 2030, as well as the amendments to the Higher Education Act. The aim of the present study is to outline the research directions pursued by the faculty members of the Department of „Physical Education and Sport“ at UNWE during the period 2017 – 2025. This period is marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which shaped part of the scholarly inquiries, with the peak of publications occurring at the height of the pandemic in 2020, when a total of 36 articles and conference papers were published. The overall number of scientific publications for the period amounts to 143, of which 102 appeared in Bulgarian journals, yearbooks and collected volumes, and 41 in foreign editions. A key conclusion of the study is the relatively small number of publications indexed in international databases (Scopus or Web of Science) and the limited research focused on professionally oriented applied physical education and sport.
