Summary/Abstract: This study argues that the sustainability of supply chains in Bulgaria is strongly influenced by two structural factors – the innovation deficit and the high energy intensity of the economy. The analysis employs primary statistical data to assess the impact of the innovation deficit and high energy intensity on the competitiveness potential and the integration of Bulgarian producers into European and global supply chains. The results reveal a limited innovation capacity, reflected in the low number of patent applications, the weak share of high-technology exports, and the insufficient degree of technological transformation. At the same time, the high levels of energy and carbon intensity make Bulgarian enterprises vulnerable within the framework of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme.
