Summary/Abstract: Integrating AI in higher education, particularly in courses emphasizing creativity, is becoming vital as students seek new ways to enhance their learning processes. In the context of a UX design course where creative tasks and multiple possible solutions are encouraged, AI offers opportunities for students to explore diverse approaches. However, when AI is permitted but not instructed, understanding how students use AI is crucial. This study examines IT students’ use of AI in UX design course, their perceptions, attitudes, and impact on learning experience. The study investigates how students utilize AI for user research tasks like creating personas and customer journey maps, examining their motivations and expectations from AI usage. Responses from 54 student teams revealed that the main motivation for using AI was time efficiency, not solution quality improvement. Furthermore, students did not find that AI significantly improved innovation, teamwork, or creativity.
