Summary/Abstract: The report focuses on power relations in prisons as total institutions. It is based on the sociological theories of Erving Goffman, Michel Foucault and Ferdinand Tönis. The aim is to examine formal and informal power relations in places of deprivation of liberty in Bulgaria. The main focus is placed on the mechanisms of informal power and the role of the “mayor“ and his deputy in the context of the constitution of the internal social order in prisons. The report reveals that power in prisons in our country is rarely exercised individually – it is collectively maintained. It turns out that formal power often neutrally coexists with informal power in prisons in Bulgaria.
