Summary/Abstract: The sociological framework of the study combines structural, critical and institutional analysis with empirical data from Bulgaria (Ministry of Justice, Helsinki Committee, NGO "Bulgarian Prison Reforms"). The restrictive conditions are in the object of the study - places of deprivation of liberty. The conditions in prisons are analysed, as well as the prevention and control of violence. Visual Model “Cycle of Institutional Violence shows that violence does not end with prison – it is exported back into society, which creates recidivism, marginalization. Bulgaria has taken a number of steps to reduce violence in prisons: Reforms in prison administration; Introduction of an independent control mechanism; Cooperation with non-governmental organizations; Training and education of personnel
