Summary/Abstract: This article explores best practices in teaching the Bulgarian language to children born and raised in a foreign language environment, where asymmetric bilingualism often shapes language acquisition. The study focuses on the unique challenges these learners face, including the prevalence of interference mistakes stemming from dominant exposure to the host country’s language. Drawing on current pedagogical approaches and practical classroom experience, the article outlines effective strategies for supporting Bulgarian language development, maintaining linguistic identity, and overcoming cross-linguistic influence. Emphasis is placed on the role of culturally relevant materials, consistent exposure, and adaptive instruction tailored to the bilingual child’s linguistic profile. The findings aim to guide educators and curriculum developers in creating more effective learning environments for heritage language learners.
