Summary/Abstract: This article is about my experience in using translation of popular songs, poems and newspaper articles as an effective method for studying the Bulgarian language in a foreign language environment. By engaging with culturally relevant and emotionally expressive texts, students can develop deeper linguistic competence, improve their understanding of idiomatic expressions, and strengthen their connection to Bulgarian heritage. Translation activities promote active language use, critical thinking, and crosscultural literacy, making them particularly valuable in settings where Bulgarian is not the dominant language. The article also discusses the significance of earning the Seal of Biliteracy, a credential that recognizes high-level proficiency in two or more languages. Obtaining the Seal not only validates the bilingual skills of the students but also enhances their college applications, providing a competitive edge and access to scholarships and academic opportunities. This dual approach–creative translation practice and formal certification offers a powerful framework for maintaining and advancing Bulgarian language proficiency in diverse educational contexts.
