Summary/Abstract: The article examines some of the most typical errors made by students when translating a literary text. Two classifications are used as a basis: one analyzes translation errors according to the degree of misinformation they cause, and the other examines the reasons that underlie them. The material for the study is student translations of several novels by Darya Dontsova. A descriptive method based on a comparative analysis of a translation with the original was used. The basis for comparison is the lexical unit (word, phrase) at the lexical and semantic levels. As a result of the study, it was established that the most common errors are of the type of “inaccuracies”and “distortions”, and the reasons for them are the inattentive attitude to the system of meaning and meanings in the source text, misunderstanding of what the author is talking about a given subject, lack of cognitive experience in the field of reality described by the author, and insufficient mastery of the language of the original.
