Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the pragmatic issues of translation of the emotional-evaluative discourse formula Nichego sebe, which is frequently used in Russian dialogue to express surprise. The analysis of published translations of Russian literary texts into Bulgarian shows that three approaches to transferring the meaning of the original speech unit are applied. The most frequent one is the use of a functional analogue – Bulgarian speech formula. Less often, translators resort to constructing a non-fixed utterance or using an interjection. The type of functional equivalent is chosen by the translator considering the specific speaker’s intention, the relevant parameters of the context and the common usage of expressive discourse devices in informal Bulgarian speech.
