Summary/Abstract: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s binary stories “Ego“ and “The New Generation“ employ a variety of quasi-Modernist narrative techniques to explore two key moments in Soviet history, the Tambov Peasant uprising of 1920–21 and the Stalinist persecution of the old intelligentsia in the early 1930s. The stories’ respective protagonists, a member of the pre-revolutionary rural cooperative movement and a civil engineer, are honorable, patriotic professionals whom the Soviet secret police blackmails into collaborating with the regime.
