Summary/Abstract: The article proves the significance of Turgenev's Stakhov as a literary source for the main characters of Chekhov's story: Grigory Ivanovich, Zinaida Fedorovna and the Unknown Man. In the second part of the story, thanks to the echo of the main character’s statements, united by the word “believe” in its modifications, the leitmotif of the image of the hero-narrator is revealed – faith, which is formed in the narrative thanks to the echo of Pushkin’s poems. In the final chapter of the story, Pushkin's poems, combined with Tyutchev's, give a universal sound to the ending of the story, connecting it with both individual and national destiny.
