Summary/Abstract: Greek word katavasiya existed for many centuries as a word of the liturgical language. The majority of the native speakers of the Russian language don’t identify this word with this meaning. Among them the word katavasiya is common in its meaning a mess, a confusion. This article deals with the phenomenon of a sharp divergence of two meanings of the word katavasiya in modern Russian. As a result of comparison of lexicographic sources of the 20th –21nd centuries and data of Russian National Corpus we have made a conclusion about the process of homonymy.
