Summary/Abstract: Throughout my career, I have taught Russian to American and Norwegian students whose mother tongues are devoid of grammatical case. The students’ reaction to case tends to range from bored annoyance to frustration. Once a student even asked me: But do speakers really use all those cases? (As if I was just making it up in order to torture my students.) I, however, am a grammar nerd, fascinated by the meanings in the grammatical morphemes. The challenge has been to make those meanings accessible and applicable. Here I tell the story of how my work on case semantics helped to inspire three projects: the Strategic Mastery of Russian Tool, the Russian Constructicon, and analysis of president Putin’s speeches.
