Keywords: propositional or non-propositional usage; proposition-drop in Bulgarian; language attitudes towards omitting and adding prepositions
Summary/Abstract: The article examines the opposite phenomena – omitting and adding prepositions: cases with unnecessary prepositions, constructions with a missing preposition and examples with the wrong prefix. Preposition “in excess” is a pleonasm in speech and therefore, under the influence of economy (especially in colloquial speech), Bulgarians often save the preposition from the adverbial phrases. The absence of a preposition also marks the conversion into an adverb. The use of the “concise” version is still not allowed in official literary communication or is done for the purpose of “compression” in the formal style. Due to their unconventionality, some of the uses become more frequent in the media, bearing the influence of spontaneous conversation.
