Summary/Abstract: In the present study attention is paid both to the categorial meanings of the grammatical category number in nouns with defective paradigm and to the non-categorial meanings which are different from the categorial in their essence and ways of expression. In some types of nouns one can observe semantic transformations in which semantics prevails over grammar. A juxtaposition of language material provides enough reason to argue that in Bulgarian and Russian exist many similar manifestations of categoriality and non-categoriality – in terms of quantity as well as in a more general sense.
