Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the issues related to the use of the term literary languagein various traditions and cultures. The term literary language in many European languages corresponds to what is translated as a standard language. In Japan, there are even two terms that do not coincide in meaning, but neither of them is related to literature (a standard language and a common language).
