Summary/Abstract: In an increasingly interconnected yet diverse European Union, effective intercultural communication (IC) remains both a policy imperative and a practical challenge. This paper explores the multidimensional barriers and emerging opportunities that shape intercultural communication across EU member states. Drawing from theoretical frameworks in sociolinguistics, communication studies, and European integration, the study examines key impediments such as linguistic fragmentation, cultural stereotyping, digital divides, and institutional asymmetries. Simultaneously, it highlights enabling mechanisms including EU-funded mobility programs like Erasmus+, multilingual education reforms, and digital translation technologies that foster intercultural dialogue. Through selected case studies and policy analyses, the article argues that while intercultural barriers persist, particularly in peripheral regions and underrepresented communities, the European Union holds significant structural and educational tools to turn these challenges into opportunities for deeper cohesion. The findings contribute to both scholarly understanding and policy debates around how intercultural competence can be cultivated as a cornerstone of EU solidarity and governance.
