Summary/Abstract: Migration has emerged as one of the most complex challenges confronting the European Union (EU), with implications extending beyond social and economic dimensions into the realm of security. This article examines the historical evolution of migration toward the EU, the ways in which it has been integrated into the EU’s security agenda, and the policy responses developed over time. Drawing on securitization theory and historical institutionalism, the analysis explores how migration is framed in political discourse, the operational role of EU border and asylum systems, and the tensions between humanitarian obligations and border control. Case studies highlight critical routes and policy gaps, including inconsistent burden-sharing and fragmented integration strategies. The study concludes by proposing a balanced framework that combines security imperatives with resilience and human rights commitments, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of migration as a security challenge in the EU context.
