Summary/Abstract: The deinstitutionalization of persons with disabilities represents an interdisciplinary and complex topic that lies at the intersection of human rights, social inclusion, public safety, and social services. In the context of post-communist Romania, the socio-professional integration of persons with disabilities is a critical issue, as the country continues to make significant efforts to remove economic, cultural, and social barriers. These efforts aim to ensure that citizens with disabilities can enjoy equal rights and opportunities, including the right to a life beyond mere subsistence. Discussing the socio-professional integration of persons with disabilities should become part of the collective mindset, both among the general population and professionals working in this broad field. This is a necessary step toward normality. But is large-scale deinstitutionalization truly possible in practice? Can this process endanger not only the safety of the persons being reintegrated but also of those living in their proximity? Is there a real link between theoretical frameworks and practical realities in this sector? And, above all, is society prepared to welcome persons with disabilities into its midst? These are just some of the questions that prompted the development of this short study, which aims to serve as a starting point for a broader and more realistic debate.
