Summary/Abstract: The prison system is a system of institutions in which prison sentences are served and is established by law. This system includes a system of several types of prison institutions that are divided according to different criteria. Within each prison, a formal system of execution of prison sentences regulated by legal regulations is implemented. This formal system is called the prison sentence execution system. The prison system in the narrow sense and the formal system of execution of prison sentences together make up the prison system of a country. In contrast to the formal system that is socially and legally formulated, the informal one does not have its own written form, but has clearly defined unwritten rules of conduct that convicts within penal institutions accept and adhere to. The informal system is a specific subculture in the prison community that often disrupts the functioning of the formal system, which is why the security service carries out inappropriate supervision and control of high-risk convicts in order to act promptly and prevent violations of the prescribed house rules of the institution. Such operational actions require a high level of expertise and professionalism. The aim of this paper is to point out the importance of the security service and their role in the organization and functioning of penal and correctional institutions. In this paper, we will discuss the functioning of the informal prison system, as well as the way the security service operates in suppressing and preventing illegal actions and activities within the prison.
