Summary/Abstract: This article examines the relationship between the demand for quality journalism and media ethics codes in 46 countries, including all EU member states. The central hypothesis is that ethical journalism standards contribute to shaping the concept of quality journalism. The analysis investigates whether the codes explicitly link ethics and quality or provide definitions of quality journalism. Findings reveal that such a direct connection is lacking. A secondary focus examines whether ethical norms evolve in response to social, economic, and technological change to meet the requirements of journalism as a democratic necessity. Practices show, albeit hesitantly, the adaptation of ethical rules to new conditions and risks. The analysis is designed to help create framework conditions for quality journalism.
