Summary/Abstract: In modern Bulgarian there are two words 'de' – a reduced form of an interrogative adverb and a pragmatic particle of presumed verb origin. This study examines the process of their convergence, as well as the relationship between the particle 'de' and cognate particles in other Slavic languages. The correspondences of the individual functions of Bulgarian 'de' in Ukrainian are researched with use of material from a parallel corpus.
