Summary/Abstract: In the first volume of the book “Principality of Bulgaria in terms of history, geography and ethnography” (1894) the teacher and social activist Georgi Dimitrov from Kyustendil along with the description of certain eastern dialects pays special attention to the Shopi and the Shopi dialect. He prepared rich dialectological notes and examples on the phonetic, morphological and lexical features of the Shopi dialects from Samokov, Dupnitsa, Kyustendil, Izvor, Radomir, Sofia, Novo Selo, Iskrets, Breznik, Tran, Tsaribrod. Affirming their Bulgarian essence and their belonging to the Bulgarian language territory, he focuses particularly on those rather interesting and specific features that reflect and define their uniqueness setting them apart within the rich tapestry of Bulgarian dialects.
