Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the evolving role of the digital twin (DT) as a foundational component of virtual worlds within the Industry 5.0 paradigm. Through a scoping literature review and comparative analysis, the study traces the DT's evolution from an Industry 4.0 tool to a human-centric, system-level enabler in the industrial metaverse. Key findings emphasize the expansion of DTs into Human Digital Twins (HDTs) and their integration with immersive interfaces, AI, and resilient architectures. The research concludes that DTs are pivotal to achieving the core pillars of Industry 5.0—human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience—by fostering symbiotic human-machine collaboration and bridging the physical-digital divide.
