Summary/Abstract: Since Greek antiquity there have been concerns about the relationship between language and thought, between language and extralinguistic reality. We aim in our research, following a theoretical preamble concerning motivation in language, to analyze one of the aspects of the “individual speech” of integral linguistics (E. Coșeriu), with reference to the literary work of Ion Creangă, namely, the expressive value of onomatopoeic verbs and nouns, relatively motivated in context. Considering the structure, the role of the phonetic level, its relation to the communicative situation. The general conclusion is that onomatopoeic motivation - one of many individual aspects - the interdependent relationship between expressive competence at all levels of language (phonetic, lexical-semantic, discursive), meaning and contextualization of language contribute to the achievement of expressivity in the narrative text.
