Summary/Abstract: The Standard for Japanese Language Education (2010) offers a universal system for the design, planning, teaching and assessment of practical Japanese language skills. It promotes awareness and tolerance towards the foreign culture through the practical application of the language. The present paper introduces the major points of the Standard for Japanese Language Education and the opportunities it offers for successful planning of courses and classes in practical Japanese, as well. Last but not least, we propose a model of a practical Japanese language class structured according to the requirements of the Standard. We point out the positives and possible difficulties in trying to transform a resource based on grammar translation method into a more interactive mode, in line with the Standard.
