Summary/Abstract: The present paper discusses the historical, sociopolitical, cultural, and geographic factors which lead to the formation of Gallo-roman language border, as well as to the delay in the phonologic development of Occitan as compared to French. The archaism of Occitan phonologic system is illustrated by the fossilization or the hold back or a number of sound changes that French has acquired to the utmost scale. The author examines the reasons for the appearance of the changes in question on a phonetic and phonological level, but he also combines them with extra-linguistic factors such as substrate or supersubstrate influences.
