Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to assess the socio-economic and environmental potential for development of the South Central region of the country and to propose guidelines for its development. The subject of the study is the trends in turm of the changes in demographic, socio-economic and environmental characteristics. The assessments and conclusions made are based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of statistical information and results of expert assessment of specialists on the problems of regional development in the territory of the studied region and representatives of business structures. The results obtained create opportunities to outline the potential for development of the region and to develop and present opportunities and guidelines for future sustainable development.
