Summary/Abstract: The concept of sustainable development presents significant challenges for national governments, requiring the integration of economic, social, and environmental practices into the management of public sector entities. A key issue is the increasing importance of high-quality accounting information to meet society’s demands for accountability and transparency, while ensuring the effective, efficient, and economical use of public resources with minimal environmental impact. This study aims to assess ways to enhance the quality of accounting information in General Purpose Financial Reports (GPFRs) by analyzing the financial reporting frameworks applied in the public sector of EU member states. Deviations from the qualitative characteristics of information outlined in the Conceptual Framework for International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) significantly limit the usefulness of accounting information. Consequently, this weakens its role as a foundation for decisionmaking and for ensuring governmental and public sector accountability.
