Summary/Abstract: Family business is an essential element of Bulgaria's economic structure, accounting for 23.12% of all enterprises and providing 17.63% of employment. Despite its contribution, this type of enterprise is vulnerable to economic shocks, as demonstrated by the decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the number of family businesses decreased by approximately 10%, and employment within them dropped by 27%, highlighting their dependence on family capital, traditional management models, and limited support from public institutions. Recovery after 2021 has been slow, with neither the number of enterprises nor employment levels returning to pre-crisis figures. The analysis reveals the lack of a unified definition of family business in Bulgaria, which complicates the formulation of effective policies. A comparison with the European context underscores the need for targeted support measures, such as financial incentives, succession management, and digitalization.
