Summary/Abstract: Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 19 million new cases of cancer and approximately 10 million deaths due to cancer will be registered in 2020. This worrying statistic also applies to Bulgaria, where cancer is the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular disease. Eurostat data show that the survival rate of cancer patients in Bulgaria is among the lowest in the European Union, which raises serious questions about the effectiveness of health policy. At the same time, Bulgaria is characterised by a high level of risk factors, such as smoking, poor nutrition and low physical activity, which contribute to an increase in the incidence of cancer. Systemic changes in health policy are needed. This study offers an analysis of these issues and argues that effective health policy, including increased health awareness, improved screening, adequate financing and clear coordination of the patient pathway, is the key to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients in Bulgaria.
