Summary/Abstract: Has the West won? Has liberal democracy become universal? Even Westerners, not only Easterners, doubt this happy outcome. The borders between them do not disappear with political declarations, no matter how enthusiastic they may be. The magic of speeches is short-lived. More concerned with the effects of the fall of the Iron Curtain on their own country, American opinion makers and intellectuals, as the main actors of the Cold War, themselves had different reactions: triumphalism of success on the right, the bitter taste of the economic consequences of this conflict, and moral equivalence between the imperial powers in opposing ideological blocs on the left. Regardless of the ideological options, they will lament together the danger of the "tribal invasion" of the Easterners on the civilized world, especially in Western Europe, the United States now being drawn into another type of war, the hot war with Eastern terrorism. Such reactions will, however, be tempered in official discourses meant to reflect the firm commitment to the policy of globalization and the construction of the new world order. It is unlikely that the Eastern Europeans themselves will feel this "triumph of liberal democracy", but rather the tremors of communism which, although in agony, refuses to give its last breath without making more victims. As communism loses ground in Central and Eastern Europe, it seems to come to life (wearing the subtle form of neo- or post-Marxism) in Western academic circles.
