Summary/Abstract: When the European Constitution was signed on 30 October 2004, the headlines signalled the end of a process of changing the definition of Europe and the European citizen that had been given until then. Articles such as “The EU Constitution without Christianity has set off”, “The Constitution without God, signed by the leaders of the 25”, “Christianity, a decisive factor in the history of Europe” noted the biggest shortcoming of the new European law: the total ignorance of the Christian roots of Europe. This ignorance came as a surprise to the public, but also to the heads of the European Churches. In February 2002, at the opening of the European Convention, public opinion was extremely confident about the mention of the Christian spiritual roots of the continent.
