Summary/Abstract: Drone swarms represent a technological innovation with significant potential, but also considerable risks. These coordinated groups of autonomous unmanned aircraft can be used for both beneficial purposes, such as entertainment or rescue operations, and destructive purposes, such as attacks on critical infrastructure or destabilizing the security of a state. Their use in the military domain highlights the potential for coordinated attacks of unprecedented effectiveness and the impossibility to defend against them. The article analyses how drone swarms work, their applicability in various domains, possible countermeasures and their potential to become a real threat.
